Winterizing Pool Equipment in Frisco TX — Freeze Protection That Actually Works

One night at 24 degrees can split a filter tank, crack a pump housing and turn a pool that was fine on Tuesday into a repair bill by Friday. If you own a pool in Frisco, you already know North Texas winter doesn't warn you. It's 72 one afternoon and 22 two days later. Most pool owners assume freeze mode on the automation handles it. Sometimes it does. When it doesn't, you find out the next morning at the equipment pad, and by then the water has already done the damage.

What freeze protection actually means in North Dallas

We don't drain pools or shut them down here the way northern states do. The pool stays running all winter. What you're protecting is the equipment and the exposed plumbing above ground, for the three or four nights a year when it drops hard enough to matter.

Real freeze protection has layers. Water moving through the system won't freeze at the same temperature as standing water, so the pump needs to run all night when the forecast hits freezing. That's what freeze mode does, if it's set up right. But the heater holds water in its heat exchanger even when the pump is off, the filter tank holds water, the salt cell holds water, and every valve body and union on the pad holds water. Any of those can freeze even if the pool itself is fine.

So the job is to make sure the pump actually runs, the water actually moves, and anything that can't be protected gets drained or covered.

Signs your equipment isn't ready for a freeze

Check these now, while it's still 80 outside:

Freeze mode is on but the air sensor is mounted in direct sun or hanging loose, so it reads wrong. The pump has a hum or a grinding noise at startup, which means it may not restart on a cold night. Valves haven't been turned in a year and one is stuck, so water isn't circulating through every line. Heater drain plugs are corroded and nobody has touched them. There's old insulation, or none, on exposed pipe near the pad. Not sure if this is your pool? Call us. We can tell in one visit.

Can you just do this yourself?

Partly. You can set freeze protection on your automation, check that the pump runs when you tell it to, and keep covers handy. That's worth doing.

What's harder to do yourself is knowing whether the pump will actually start in 25-degree weather, whether the capacitor is weak, or whether a valve that looks open is actually moving water. A power outage during a freeze takes out freeze mode completely, and most owners have never had a plan for that. Our team came up through the pool supply business, so we've seen what freeze damage looks like on hundreds of pads. This is exactly the kind of thing we check on every service visit.

What we do about it

Before the first forecasted freeze, we go through the whole pad. We test the pump under load and check the capacitor, since a quick visit that misses a failing pump capacitor isn't a service visit, it's a checkbox. We confirm freeze mode is on, the sensor is placed correctly, and the setpoints make sense. We cycle the valves, inspect the heater plugs and the unions, and tell you what to do if the power goes out. If something is heading the wrong way, we flag it and fix it on the spot where we can.

We keep our client list small intentionally, so every pool gets that attention before the cold arrives, not after.

Weekly pool service starts at $199 a month and goes up from there depending on the pool, its condition, and what's around it. We don't quote over the phone. We come out, look at the pool, run a free water analysis, and give you a real number. Equipment repairs are the same story: we'll tell you after we look at it.
