Salt Cell Cleaning for North Dallas TX Pools — When to Clean It and When to Replace It

North Dallas tap water is some of the hardest in Texas. That's a problem for pools in general, but for saltwater pools specifically, it accelerates one of the most common and overlooked maintenance problems: calcium buildup on the salt cell.

A salt cell — also called a salt chlorinator or chlorine generator — converts dissolved salt into chlorine through a process called electrolysis. The titanium plates inside the cell are what make this happen. When calcium deposits coat those plates, the cell has to work harder, produces less chlorine, and eventually stops working altogether.

In softer water areas, a salt cell can go six months without cleaning. In Frisco, Little Elm, Prosper, Aubrey, Celina, and The Colony, you're lucky to get three.

What Scale Buildup Does to a Salt Cell

Calcium carbonate forms on the salt cell plates whenever the water's calcium hardness, pH, or total alkalinity is off — and in North Dallas, all three tend to run high right out of the tap. The scale acts as insulation, blocking the electrolysis process. You'll see the effects in your pool chemistry before you see them in the cell itself.

The first sign is usually chlorine deficiency even though the salt level reads correctly. Homeowners often add extra chlorine or shock the pool, which helps temporarily, but the underlying cause — a scaled-up cell — stays the same. Left alone, the cell runs at elevated amperage trying to compensate, which shortens its lifespan significantly.

Signs Your Salt Cell Needs Cleaning

Low chlorine output with normal salt levels. If your controller shows proper salt but your pool keeps running low on free chlorine, check the cell first.

Controller error codes. Most salt systems display a low output or check cell code when plates are compromised. Don't ignore it.

Visible scale on the plates. Pull the cell out and hold it up to light — you should be able to see through the plates. White, chalky buildup between the plates means it's time to clean.

Sluggish or inconsistent chemistry. If you're fighting balance issues that don't respond the way they should, a dirty cell is often part of the problem.

How Salt Cell Cleaning Works

Cleaning a salt cell involves soaking the plates in a diluted acid solution — typically muriatic acid mixed with water — to dissolve the calcium deposits. The process takes 10–15 minutes, requires proper protective equipment, and needs to be done carefully to avoid damaging the titanium coating on the plates.

Done right, a clean cell looks almost new and restores full chlorine output. Done wrong — with too-high acid concentration or left soaking too long — you can permanently damage the plates and shorten cell life.

When to Replace Instead of Clean

Salt cells don't last forever. Most residential cells are rated for 3–7 years depending on run time and water chemistry. If cleaning doesn't restore chlorine output, it's usually a sign the titanium coating has degraded and the cell needs replacement.

Before paying for a new cell, it's worth testing the actual output with a multimeter. A cell that reads within normal voltage range but still produces no chlorine has usually reached end of life.

Protecting Your Salt Cell Long-Term

The single best thing you can do for your salt cell is keep calcium hardness, pH, and total alkalinity in the proper range. In North Dallas, this usually means:

Calcium hardness: 200–400 ppm

pH: 7.4–7.6

Total alkalinity: 80–120 ppm

When those numbers are right, scale forms slowly and cleaning intervals extend. When they're off — especially if pH creeps high — scale accelerates quickly.
