Phosphates in North Dallas TX Pools — The Algae Food Nobody Tests For

You shocked the pool on Saturday. By Wednesday the water has that dull, slightly green cast again, and your test kit swears the chlorine is fine. So you shock it again. Two weeks and sixty dollars of chemicals later, you're still fighting the same pool.

Something is eating your chlorine faster than you can add it. In North Texas, late summer into fall is when this gets worst — fertilizer season, the first leaves coming down, and a pool still running eight to ten hours a day in ninety-degree heat. Nine times out of ten the culprit is phosphates, and almost nobody tests for them. Not the guy with the net. Not the strips in your garage.

What phosphates actually are, and where yours came from

Phosphates are dissolved nutrients in your water. They don't hurt you, they don't cloud the pool on their own, and they'll never show up on a test strip. What they do is feed algae. Phosphate is measured in parts per billion, and the scale matters: under 100 ppb your pool is fine, over 500 ppb you're running a buffet, and past 1,000 ppb your chlorine is fighting a battle it can't win no matter how much you add.

Where does it come from? Lawn fertilizer, mostly. In Frisco and Prosper especially, where half the neighborhoods are still on new sod and heavy irrigation schedules, every rain event and every overspray carries fertilizer runoff straight into the pool. Add decaying leaves, oak pollen in the spring, dead algae from the last bloom you treated, and the phosphate already sitting in North Texas fill water.

Then there's the one that catches people off guard. A lot of over-the-counter stain and scale control products are phosphate-based. Your chlorine demand keeps climbing and never settles. Algae comes back within three or four days of a shock treatment. The water clears for a day after service, then hazes over again.

Why adding more chlorine doesn't solve it

Chlorine kills algae. It does nothing to remove the nutrient the algae grows on. So you're mowing the lawn without ever pulling the roots, and every week you pay for it again.

There's a second cost most homeowners don't see coming. If you're using stabilized chlorine — tabs, dichlor, trichlor — every extra dose drives your cyanuric acid up. Push CYA too high and your chlorine gets locked up and stops sanitizing, which means more algae, which means more shock. That loop is how a manageable pool becomes a green pool in about three weeks.

Then we dose properly, run the system continuously through the treatment, and retest. Done right, phosphates drop from four figures to near zero in one cycle, and your chlorine demand falls off a cliff the following week.
