Pool Heater and Chiller in North Dallas TX — How to Use Your Pool from February Through November

A pool in Frisco or Little Elm sits unused for months on both ends of the year — too cold in winter, and sometimes too hot to be comfortable in the peak of summer. The right equipment changes that. With a pool heater and a pool chiller, many North Dallas homeowners use their pools from February through late November.

The Texas Pool Season Problem

Most residential pools in the Frisco, Prosper, Aubrey, and Celina area are comfortable for swimming roughly May through early October without any temperature management. Outside that window:

Spring and fall: Water temperatures drop into the 60s and low 70s — cold enough that many families stop swimming even when the weather is pleasant.

Peak summer (July–August): Pool water in North Dallas can climb into the low 90s°F. At that temperature, the pool offers little relief from the heat. You're essentially swimming in warm bath water.

Both problems are solvable.

Pool Heaters: Extending Into Spring and Fall

A pool heater raises water temperature so you can swim comfortably in the cooler months. In North Dallas, a heater makes a pool usable in February, March, April, and again in October and November — months when the weather is often beautiful but the water is too cold.

Heat pumps are the most common choice for residential pools in the area. They work like an air conditioner in reverse — extracting heat from the outside air and transferring it to the water. They're efficient in mild conditions, which makes them well-suited for North Texas springs and falls where temperatures are cool but not frigid.

Gas heaters (natural gas or propane) heat water faster and work regardless of outside air temperature. They're useful for quick heating — warming the pool before a weekend event, for example — but cost more to operate over time. In Celina and Aubrey where propane is common, gas heaters are a practical option.

Solar heaters use panels on the roof to warm pool water using sunlight. Texas has abundant sun, which makes solar viable, though heating capacity is limited and they don't produce results as quickly as heat pump or gas options.

Pool Chillers: Making Hot Texas Summers Bearable

This is the equipment most homeowners outside of Texas don't know exists — but it's arguably more useful here than a heater.

A pool chiller works on the same principle as an air conditioner, removing heat from the water and exhausting it as warm air. When pool water temperatures reach 88–92°F in July and August, a chiller can bring them down to a comfortable 78–82°F.

The result: your pool is actually refreshing in the hottest months instead of feeling like a bathtub. Families that stopped using their pool in July because it was too warm often find they're swimming through August once a chiller is installed.

Chillers are less common than heaters but increasingly popular in newer developments in Frisco, Prosper, and The Colony — particularly in pools with lots of sun exposure and no natural shade.

Heater and Chiller Combined: Year-Round Swimming

Some manufacturers produce units that function as both a heater and a chiller — often called a heat pump with cooling mode. These are the most versatile option for North Dallas pools because they address both problems with a single piece of equipment.

With combined heating and cooling:

February through April: heat the pool to comfortable temperatures

May through June: allow the pool to reach natural temperature

July through August: cool the pool during peak heat

September through November: heat again as temperatures drop

The result is a pool you can realistically use in every month except December and January — and even then, with a heater, mild winter weekends become swim days.

Maintenance for Temperature Equipment

Heaters and chillers require annual inspection and cleaning to operate efficiently. The coils and heat exchangers can accumulate scale, especially with North Dallas's hard water. A heat pump that's been neglected will struggle to reach target temperatures and consume more energy.
